your say on a UK national initiative in fluid dynamics
We are pleased to launch an open call for registration to attend a UK
Fluids Community early career researcher (ECR) focus group.
The purpose of the focus groups is to bring the ECR UK Fluids community

Some key questions we will be looking to consider:
* Are there any training opportunities you would like to see provided
by a national initiative for ECRs?
* How can a national initiative support ECRs career development?
* What would you like to see from a national initiative?
* How could a national initiative support tackling equality, diversity
and inclusion challenges faced by ECRs?
To qualify as an early career researcher you will be: finishing PhD
students, early postdoctoral researchers, experienced postdoctoral
researchers, or academic staff in their first permanent role as a
lecturer/assistant professor.

CLOSING DATE: 1/2/2022 (12:00 noon)
FROM: Paul Williams, University of Reading, 11/1/2022
SUBJECT: Research Associate in Atmospheric Science or Meteorology
TOPIC: Improving Understanding and Diagnosis of Jet-Stream Turbulence
DETAILS: The leading cause of weather-related aircraft incidents is
turbulence near the jet stream, and climate change is exacerbating the
problem. Clear-air turbulence (CAT) is one kind of turbulence difficult
for pilots to detect and forecasters to predict. One source of CAT is
the release of hydrodynamic instability. Hydrodynamic instability,
defined here as dry symmetric instability and its limiting case of
inertial instability, is an imbalance between the horizontal pressure
gradient, Coriolis, and centrifugal forces. We have an incomplete
understanding of how the instability forms, releases, produces
turbulence, and returns to stability. This project is a combined
observational, modelling, and diagnostic approach to understand the life
cycle of CAT produced by the release of hydrodynamic instability. The
project is a collaboration between Profs. David Schultz and Geraint
Vaughan (University of Manchester) and Prof. Paul Williams (University
of Reading). This vacancy is at Manchester but there will be a second
vacancy at Reading later. Further details:

SUBJECT: EPSRC Funded Research Assistant or Associate/Fellow position
(12 months)
TOPIC: Numerical simulation of flow boiling in microchannels
DETAILS: Research Assistant or Associate/Fellow position at the
University of Nottingham, University Park Campus. This research aims to
investigate the fundamental aspects of flow boiling in confined
channels, from nucleation to thin film formation to dryout and critical
heat flux, by developing ad-hoc numerical methods within the open-source
toolbox OpenFOAM and exploiting the built-in libraries for
interface-resolved liquid-vapour flows with surface tension and phase
change. It also foresees potential extensions with phase field methods
and multiscale coupling with a molecular-dynamics solver. The project is
part of a collaborative work including also Imperial College London
(Prof. Matar, Prof. Markides) and Brunel University (Prof. Karayiannis).
