SUBJECT: UK Fluids Conference - PhD student competitions
DETAILS: The 2023 UK Fluids Conference took place in Glasgow last week,
running over three full days and drawing well over 200 attendees. Many
thanks to the Organising Committee from University of Glasgow and
University of Strathclyde for an outstanding job. Posts on the
Strathclyde MAE Facebook page [1] include a nice selection of photos
from the conference. 

As in previous years, UKFN and JFM/Flow jointly sponsored competitions
for the best student oral and poster presentations. Warm congratulations
to the winners and runners-up.

SUBJECT: Launch of UK Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences
DETAILS: The UK Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences (KE Hub
[2]) is a new initiative run by the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge
to promote, facilitate and support knowledge exchange activities between
Academia and Business, Industry & Government. 

In order to ensure a diverse UK-wide institutional representation, KE
Champions act as local advocates of the initiative. Many but not all
Mathematics and Statistics departments have nominated KE Champions, as
may be seen in this interactive map [3]. If you are interested in
representing your department, further details of what it entails and how
to express your interest are given here [4].

DETAILS: The BAMC 2024 will take place at Newcastle University from
April 9th-11th. The colloquium is the largest applied mathematics
conference in the UK bringing together students, academics and
industrial professionals to discuss recent developments in the field.
The scope of the conference is broad and traditionally includes several
areas of interest to the UK Fluids community. Proposals for
mini-symposia are now open and warmly encouraged. The deadline for

5th birthday celebration event. This event is envisaged to be a
celebration of fluid dynamics and to highlight the importance of fluids
research industrially and societally. The programme will feature 3-4
keynote talks (confirmed speakers so far are Ann Dowling; Cath Noakes,
Stephen Belcher (Met Office) and Steven Cowley (Princeton Plasma Physics
Laboratory)), a women in fluids discussion panel, a poster session and a
showcase of fluids outreach demonstrations suitable for the general

SUBJECT: Fluid dynamics meets synchrotron X-ray high-speed imaging
DATE & LOCATION: 21-22 March 2024, Grenoble, France
DETAILS: The primary goal of this workshop is to highlight the
capabilities of synchrotron X-ray imaging to investigate fast fluid
dynamic problems and to bring together both scientists who have
experience in using such techniques as well as those who would be
interested in considering using them. The workshop will be a unique
platform to foster discussions on which areas and specific problems in
fluid dynamics might benefit from fast X-ray imaging. The participants
will also learn how to apply for access to such a facility and how to
prepare and conduct a successful experimental campaign either using
environments available at the beamline as well as bringing their own
setups. Details of the event, the preliminary program and a list of
invited speakers can be found on the workshop website [14]. Registration

teamed up with the CCP on Wave-Structure Interaction (CCP-WSI) to
organise a joint meeting to discuss the latest advances in using
meshless methods for fluid structure interaction problems. Hosted by Dr
Tom Rendall at the University of Bristol, the event will include
introductions and information on the research communities, technical
talks from leading experts in the field, and time for networking and
broader group discussions towards the end of the day. The event is free
and lunch will be provided, but registration is required. Further
